Pantry List
Fresh Ingredients
These are my staples. If you have these few fresh ingredients you can cook like a chef and make your meals look and taste amazing.
- Parsley
- Cilantro
- Lemons
- Limes
- Spring onions
- Bell Peppers
- Mushrooms
- Ginger
- Garlic
- Onion
- Potatoes or sweet potatoes
You can get all of these without any single use plastic! Bring your own bags to the store when you go and viola – you have what you need plastic free.
The below herbs are a little more difficult to find plastic free – you can buy them when they are in season and fresh at farmers markets. Select stores may have them plastic free.
- Bay leaves
- Thyme
- Rosemary
It’s always good to have stock on hand. In winter I make my own and freeze them or use them from vegetable scraps. Otherwise I have
- Stock Cubes
Veg Stock:
Back to making your own veg stock. If you want to separate your wet waste you can store these in a plastic container in the fridge until you have collected enough to make stock.
- Onion skins
- Garlic skins
- Potato / sweet potato / carrot / peels
- Veg trimmings
If you use kale or spinach the broth will turn more of a green / yellow color.
Storing Food:
Store your parsley and cilantro like you would a bouquet of flowers. Cut the stems slightly, and submerge them in a jar of water and pop them in the fridge. It’s honestly incredible how long they will last this way. Fresh herbs when you need them.
I splurge on avocados every now and then. I love them so much, but I am hyper aware of the distances they need to travel to get to me. But you can buy avocados sans plastic. They are so delicious in a salad or on toast.
